FROM PLAYER TO COACH

Competitive Experience Shapes the Way Janissa Coaches

Before becoming a table tennis coach in Singapore, Janissa spent years developing as a competitive player through structured training and regular competition.

She trained as a Singapore Sports School athlete and experienced first-hand the discipline, repetition and attention to detail required to develop in competitive table tennis.

Those experiences now influence the way she communicates with players. Rather than simply telling a player that something is wrong, Janissa believes it is important to help them understand what needs to change and why the adjustment matters.

EXPERIENCE BEHIND THE COACHING

Understanding the Player's Side of Training

Having trained as a player herself, Janissa understands that improvement is not always immediate. A technique that looks simple from the outside may take time for a player to understand and reproduce consistently.

She also understands the pressures that can come with school training, competitions and expectations to improve.

This experience helps her approach coaching with patience while still encouraging players to take responsibility for their own development.

COACHING APPROACH

Clear, Practical and Adapted to the Individual

Different players understand instructions differently. Janissa adapts the way she communicates rather than expecting every player to learn in exactly the same way.

01

Keep Instructions Clear

Break technical ideas into practical instructions that players can understand and apply.

02

Coach the Individual

Adjust explanations according to the player's age, experience and way of learning.

03

Build Understanding

Help players understand why a correction matters rather than asking them to repeat movements without explanation.

04

Encourage Progress

Recognise improvement while continuing to identify areas that can develop further.

FOR PARENTS

A Coach Your Child Can Communicate With

For younger players, good coaching is not only about knowing table tennis. Children also need instructions they can understand and an environment where they feel comfortable asking questions.

Janissa aims to communicate clearly with both the player and parent, particularly when discussing areas that are improving and what may need more time.
